George B. Keller, 93, of Manchester died Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at the West Village Care Center, Independence, IA from chronic lung disease.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm, Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the Community Congregational Church in Manchester by Rev. Kurt Pasko. Family will greet friends one hour before services Saturday at the church. Burial with military honors will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
George was born November 17, 1914 in Manchester, the son of Claude and Ida (Robeson) Keller. He attended school in Manchester and graduated in 1932. He served 10 months in the CCC and entered employment for Haug & Son Garage as a bookkeeper and parts man. In 1941, he started working for the United States Postal Service as a clerk, city carrier, and rural carrier before retiring in June 1972. George was united in marriage to Margaret Evelyn Burbridge in Manchester on November 13, 1941. He served with the United States Air Army Corp from August 1942 ?" November 1945.
George served as Finance Officer for American Legion Post #45 for 10 years, served on the Draft Board for 10 years, and the Veterans Affairs Commission, In 1955, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Manchester Cemetery Company, serving as secretary/treasurer for 22 years and remained active on the board until his retirement in October 2001. He was active in Community Congregational UCC Church and served on Boards and committees and was Church School Superintendent for 10 years, Church Moderator for two years, and church treasurer for 12 years.
George was a member of the Manchester American Legion Post 45, the DAV, the Manchester Golf & Country Club, the Community Congregational UCC, the National Association of Letter Carriers, and National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
George is survived by one daughter, Jean (Richard) Nelson of Davenport and three grandchildren, Jay Nelson, Davenport, Michael (Anya) Nelson, Juneau, Alaska, and Emily (David) Zellmann, Des Moines; one brother-in-law, Robert Henderson, Oelwein.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret in 1986, his parents, one son in infancy; three sisters, Nina Robeson, Margaret Burrack and Mabel Henderson; two brothers, Charles and Arthur Keller.
