George Haronitis, 91, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at his home. Visitation: 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 6, 2021, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with Trisagion Service to begin at 7 p.m. Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
George was born April 3, 1930, in Crete, Greece, the son of John and Elaine (Montalemaki) Haronitis. He served in the Greek Army. After immigrating to the United States, he was a dedicated employee who loved his job at Montgomery Ward for 25 years until his retirement. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church where he enjoyed volunteering for Greek Festivals and Greek Dinners. George was also a member and former president of the Pancretan Association of America local chapter.
George loved tending to his lawn and garden, and he always enjoyed visiting with his neighbors. He will be deeply missed.
Survivors include his sisters, Clara Bohren of Cedar Rapids, Mary (Dwight) Williams of Maryland, and Harouloi Hamiotaki of Greece, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
George was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Dimitrios Haronitis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church.
