George R. Durey, 90, formerly of Manchester, Iowa, passed away at his home in Farmington, Minnesota, on August 11, 2021. Memorial Service for George will be held on Saturday, September 18, 10:30 AM at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home, Manchester, Iowa, with the Reverend Gary Snook officiating.

George was born to Floyd A. and Cora E. (Rolfe) Durey on September 12, 1930, at home on the farm in “Frog Hollow,” an area now known as the Volga River State Recreation Area north of Fayette, Iowa. He attended a one-room rural school in Fayette County then graduated from Fayette High School. George went to college and obtained his master’s degree in Social Work. George married Lenore Richards on July 17, 1953, in Marion, Indiana, and two children were born into this union. After serving churches in Chicago and Galesburg, Illinois, George worked 38 years as a Clinical Social Worker for the Federal Government, first with the Bureau of Indian Affairs then with the Veteran’s Administration. Upon retirement, George and Lenore moved to Portland, Oregon, where George volunteered with senior adults and helped in the nursery at a large church. He became known as “Grandpa” because he had a gift of quieting young children where others could not. George was an avid gardener and enjoyed working in his yard. He loved using his beautiful baritone voice to serve the church. George and Lenore returned “home” to Manchester in 2006 before moving to Minnesota more recently to be closer to their son. He loved spending time with friends and family. There will be a void in the lives of those who knew George, but loved ones are comforted that George trusted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and is enjoying his eternal reward in Heaven.

George is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lenore Durey of Farmington, Minnesota; his children, David (Jeannette) Durey of Lakeville, Minnesota, and Phyllis (Charles) Hardison of El Cajon, California; five grandchildren, Loren Durey, Bree (Ryan) Carlson, Elaina (Zach) Hofmann, Danae (David) Penner, Evan Hardison, and Jason Hardison; 2 great-grandchildren, Rainer and Talia; sister, Shirley Thrall of California; and many many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Cora Durey; sisters, Charlotte, Margaret, Marian, Carol, Arline, Eloise, Lorna, Joanne; and brothers, Howard, Lucius, Dale, Forrest, Paul, and Darin.
