Genevieve was born December 4, 1920 to Merle and Violet Tanner. She was raised near Palo until the effects of the Great Depression led to the sale of the family farm. The family moved to Cedar Rapids. She married Harold Stickney April 19, 1942 in Kahoka, Missouri just prior to his assignment to the USS South Dakota. The scarred battleship returned and the reunited family shipped out to duty in Louisiana until the war’s end. Harold and Gen came home to the family business, the Kozy Inn. In 1948 they bought the Scoreboard in Marion and operated it until retiring in 1984. Gen was a long-time hostess with Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion.
Gen was an active member of First Lutheran Church, PEO, and Marion American Legion Post
#298 Auxiliary.
She is survived by her sons, Tom (Shirley), Marion, and Jim (Jane Prater), North Liberty; daughter Susan of St. Louis; grandchildren, Scott Stickney, Sherry (Troy) Mann, Jennifer (Dan) Johnson, Tanner (Pete) Colegrove, Ashley Stickney, Kaitlin (Kyle) Wilcox, Sarah (Aaron) Finch, Michael Stickney, Meghan Pinson and Jon Youngman. Also surviving are 12 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and countless friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harold; son, Danny; sister, Arlene Schultz; and brother-in-law, Ralph Schultz. Family meant everything to Gen. She was loving, caring, nurturing and had a heart of gold. As one of her friends said, “She was a true lady.” She will be forever loved and missed.
