Gary L. Olson, 65, of 1560 5th Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, died suddenly, Thursday, September 20, 2007, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, Iowa, with military honors.
Survivors include his daughter, Kara (Tom) Slaymaker of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Samantha and Andrew Slaymaker, who will dearly miss him and his good sense of humor; a sister, Sharron Berg of Arizona; his stepmother, Phyllis Olson of Decorah; half-brother, Kirsten of Decorah; and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Roger Berg; and his wife, Phyllis Olson in 2004.
Gary was born March 27, 1942, the son of Vernon and Betty (Hansen) Olson, in Decorah, Iowa. He served with the United States Navy from 1959 to 1963. Gary worked as a refrigeration specialist. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and fishing.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Gary.
