Gary Jon Hoppes, Ph.D., 58, of 2075 Banner Valley Rd., Ely, died Monday, July 11, 2005, in Kindred Hospital, Sycamore, Illinois, following a battle with Guillain-Barré syndrome. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m. Friday (July 15) at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. A luncheon will be served Saturday, July 16, 2005, from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 1260 29th St., Marion, with funeral services following the luncheon at 1 p.m. The Rev. Randy Bobzien and Col. Andy Anderson (Ret.) will officiate. Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City, with military honors provided by Ely American Legion Post. No. 555, Central City American Legion Wapsie Post No. 421 and Navy Detail.

Gary was born October 9, 1946, in Davenport, Iowa, to James William Hoppes and Viola Pearl (Johnson) Hoppes. On November 5, 1971, he was united in marriage to Donna Silver at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Gary served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 - 1969, then the Naval Reserves until 1993, attaining the rank of chief petty officer. He was a 1965 graduate of Maquoketa High School. Gary received both his master's and doctorate degrees from Iowa State University. He was involved in education for over thirty years, most recently at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Gary was a member of the Ely American Legion Post 555, Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 808; and VFW Chapter 2780. He was currently serving as president of the manufacturing division of NAIT and was also highly involved with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Gary's hobbies and interests were collecting and restoring old cars, telling his life experiences and stories and helping students and anyone with any need.

He will be so truly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Silver; two sisters, Nancy (Allen) Sellnau of Martelle, and Linda Atkinson of Lost Nation; mother-in-law, Grace Silver of Marion; brother-in-law, Wayne (Pam) Silver of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Pamela D. Silver of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Ed Silver.

Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 555 of Ely.

A memorial fund will be established for a scholarship fund at a state university in Iowa.
