Garrald W. (Bill / Red) Schroeder, 87, of Oelwein, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away February 15, 2018, at Mercy Living Plus, Oelwein. Graveside Service: 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 19, 2018, Sheridan Cemetery, eight miles south of Tama, Celebrant, Diane Thovson officiating. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Bill was born December 20, 1930, in Poweshiek County on a farm near Grinnell, Iowa, the son of William and Esther (Haynes) Schroeder. Bill spent four years in the United States Air Force after schooling in Tama, Iowa. He then returned to Tama and worked for O.K. Tire Shop and drove a school bus. In 1953, Bill worked in Cedar Rapids at Collins Radio (Rockwell Collins). On October 19, 1957, He married Betty “Joyce” Van Orsdale at the Little Brown Church in Nashua Iowa.
He lived in Cedar Rapids and Swisher for many years and retired from Rockwell in 1988. Bill and Joyce moved to Oelwein in 1994. During retirement, Bill spent several winters in Englewood, Florida. He was active in various bowling and golf leagues. Bill loved to hunt, fish, bowl, and work at home. He was always there to help others when in need.
Bill is survived by his wife, Joyce; several nieces and nephews; dear friends, Ron and Sue Glasgow of Minnesota; and the Bena family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Esther; sisters, Jean Tibbedeaux and Ruth Kriz.
