Garnet E. Walker, 99, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, December 1, 2013, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Service: 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at Hillside Wesleyan Church, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends from 4-7 on Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Keystone Cemetery, Keystone, Iowa.
Survivors include her son, Ed (Carol) Walker of Easton, Maryland; two grandchildren, Scott Walker and Robin Michelle Walker; two great-grandchildren, Dylnn Lane and Joshua Lane; and a sister-in-law, Eleanor Emmel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Homer Walker; and three brothers, Arthur, Arnold and Delmar Emmel.
Garnet was born on February 1, 1914, in Keystone, daughter of Edward and Johannah (Tecklenburg) Emmel. She graduated from Keystone High School and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Garnet taught in Keystone and in Long Beach, California. There she met Homer Walker and they married on July 11, 1943. They returned to Iowa in 1951. Garnet then worked at Rockwell from 1958 until 1979, retiring after 20 years. Homer passed in 1986. She moved to Meth-Wick in 2002. Garnet enjoyed traveling with her sister-in-law, Eleanor Emmel, playing scrabble and cards, but most of all she loved her family and being with them. She was a volunteer at Aid to Women.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to Meth-Wick or Hillside Wesleyan Church.
