Freeda Mae (Oliphant) Dunlap, 88, of 3562 Hagerman Road, Toddville, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at Union Park Nursing Home in Des Moines, Iowa, following a long illness. Services: 2:00 pm Saturday February 16, 2008, at the Center Point Road Church of Christ, Marion, Iowa, by Minister Abe Langston, Friends may call today (Friday) from 5-8 pm at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, Iowa Burial: Dunkard Cemetery, Midway.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Roger Dunlap and his wife, Kathryn of Hiawatha and David Roland Dunlap and his wife, Susan of Ankeny; two daughters, Sharlene Carol Dunlap of Des Moines and Sharon Kay Dunlap of Toddville; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Oliphant of Toddville and Rosemary White of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Jeremiah and Joshua Dunlap, Karli Dunlap, Brooke Teachout, Megan Kucera and Nathan Krumrei; four great grandchildren; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Born December 20, 1919, in rural Center Point, Iowa, to Fay F. Oliphant and Zula Mae (Minor) Oliphant, she married Charles Albert Dunlap on March 21, 1948, at the Church of Christ, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Freeda graduated High school Valedictorian from Monroe Township in Toddville, IA in 1937. She was on the Toddville Girls Basketball team that qualified and played at the Girls High School State Basketball Tournament. Freeda received her teaching degree from the Iowa Teachers College and began her life long career in Rowley, Iowa in the Number 5 one room school house. She continued teaching in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area as both a full time and substitute teacher at every grade leve, although history was her major.

Her sales career started with Hickey Brother Cigars in Chicago in the early forties managing the cigar stores at the bustling fine hotels and meeting many prominent movie celebrities. It took her to Washington D.C. to work at the Willard Hotel in the forties. Freeda was working at the Montrose Hotel in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, when she met a handsome serviceman, Charles Albert Dunlap. They were married on March 21, 1948, and spent their life together until Charles’ passing in 1994.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Darwin (Sock) Ivan Oliphant and Harold Vincent Oliphant and his wife, Wilma; her brothe-in-law, Richard Warner Dunlap and his wife, Dorothy; a niece, Loleta Jo Oliphant Carpenter; and a nephew, Gregory Matthew Dunlap.
