Frederick Henry Wittenburg, 83, of Martelle, died Sunday, October 20, 2002, at his home, following a brief illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 24, 2002, at Martelle United Methodist Church by Rev. Jon Moss. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Burial: Springville Cemetery.
His family includes his wife of 52 years, Luella; his children and grandchildren, Larry (Lori) Wittenburg of Springville and their children, Nichole and Madison,
Allan (Kim) Wittenburg of Springville and their children , Zach and Kalli, Leroy (Barb) Wittenburg of Springville and their children, Amanda, Julie, Michael and Nathan, Jane (Steve) Eiben of Springville and their children, Nancy and Katie, Joan (Scott) Ehlts of Mt. Vernon and their children, Jessica and Nick; his daughter-in-law, Cindy Wittenburg and children, Brad, Matt (Natalie), Stacy (Anthony) Mason and Crystal; and Fred?s great-grandson, Caleb Mason.
Also surviving are his brother, Harold (Dorothy) Wittenburg of Coggon; his sister-in-law, Helen Wittenburg of Slater, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Rev. Everett Wittenburg and Clarence Wittenburg; and a son, Don Wittenburg.
Fred was born March 29, 1919, the son of Henry and Grace (Kottmeier) Wittenburg in rural Benton County. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII. On July 2, 1950, he married Luella Lohman at St. John?s Lutheran Church in rural Iowa County. He farmed for many years in the Vinton and Martelle areas. Fred was a member and trustee of Martelle United Methodist Church. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. To Fred, his family, farm and church meant everything. He loved attending family functions, especially to watch his grandchildren?s activities.
