Fred W. Petersen, 88, 1324 19th Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, died Friday, March 4, 2005, at home following a long illness. Services 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 7, 2005, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids by Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer. Friends may call from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Monday, prior to service. Burial: Dunkard Cemetery, Toddville, with military honors by Toddville American Legion Post 674.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy; a daughter, Barbara Usher and husband Gary of Marion; a grandson, Chad Usher; a brother, Ray Petersen and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters and two brothers.

Fred was born January 26, 1917, the son of Alfred Hans and Christina (Juhl) Petersen in Monmouth, Illinois. He served in the Army during WWII. On December 7, 1946, he married Dorothy E. Matheny in Iowa City. Fred worked as a carpenter for 52 years and was a member of Carpenter Union 308. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, The Cubs and growing roses.
