Fred W. “Bill” Felty, 58, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away in his home in Central City on Saturday, June 30, 2007, after a struggle with bone cancer.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, 2007, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids by Rev. Harlan Gillespie, Rev. Jonna Jensen, and Momodu Kamara. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church. His body will be cremated with burial at a later date in Lake Worth, Florida. Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Central City is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his son, Timothy B. Felty of Miami, Florida; a sister, Florence Robertson of Central City; three aunts, Margaret Witherow of Lake Worth, Florida, Annette Mannin of Greenacres, Florida, and Barbara Belcher of Conover, North Carolina; and loving cousins in several states. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved stepfather, Ernest Schnopp Jr.
Fred was born on June 24, 1949, in West Palm Beach, Florida, the beloved son of Florence B. (Shamo) Felty and Fred Felty Jr. He attended schools in Lake Worth, Florida, graduating from South Dade Senior High School in Homestead, Florida, in 1967 and Miami-Dade Community College in 1969. He received a BS in System Science in 1971 from the University of West Florida in Pensacola.
His career in computer programming included positions at First Federal Savings and Loan in Lake Worth, Florida; Martin County School District in Ft. Pierce, Florida; Greyhound Leisure Services and Underwriters Guarantee Insurance Corporation in Miami, Florida; and Fiserv Life Insurance Solutions in Cedar Rapids.
He was a disaster volunteer for 13 years for the Greater Miami Chapter of the American Red Cross, recognized for his work locally as well as the Value Jet airplane crash and the Ecstasy cruise ship fire, as well as shelter manager for both hurricanes Hugo and Andrew.
After his move to Cedar Rapids in 1999, Fred was an active participant in the Singles Group at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Heritage Toastmasters, and as a disaster volunteer for the Grant Wood Chapter of the American Red Cross. Fred was also an active genealogist.
Thank you to all of Fred's caregivers and those who provided rides and ran errands for Fred and his sister.
