Francis Edgar Wintz, 97, formerly of Central City and Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Martin Schuhmacher. The family will greet friends two hours prior to the service at the Funeral Home. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery in Central City. Military honors conducted by American Legion Wapsie Post #421.
Immediate survivors include four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and in-laws, JoFran and Jim Falcon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; and one brother, Theodore.
Francis was born September 8, 1911, to Lillian and Pastor Reuben L. Wintz in Allendale, Michigan. He felt right at home in the Lord’s house. His mother played the piano and sang beautifully for congregations in Michigan and Minnesota, where his father pastored for 25 years. His brother Ted was very active in leading his friends to Jesus while attending Coe College in the early 1920’s. Francis attended the First Christian Church in Cedar Rapids, where he was baptized after accepting Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Later, while attending high school in Mt. Vernon and Central City, he enjoyed winning oratorical contests with Billy Sunday’s sermon: “What Think Ye of Christ?” He attended churches in Mount Vernon, Cedar Rapids, and Central City, and was one of the founding members of the Living Water United Methodist Church of Marion.
Francis graduated from Central City High School in 1931, and attended the Iowa State Teacher’s College. He married Leoma Sisler and they were married for 46 years. After her death, he later married Lois Patten. She died August 21, 1998. Francis served with the U.S. Seabees ship repair unit at Pearl Harbor during World War II. He worked at Iowa State Employment Service for 25 years, retiring in 1976. Francis was a 60 year member of the American Legion.
