Francis J. McElligott, 87, of 1175 F. Ave, Marion, Iowa, died, Friday, April 11, 2008, following a brief illness. Services: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, by Father John Gossman. The family will greet friends from 3 - 7 p.m. on Monday, April 14, 2008 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, where a vigil will take place at 6:30 p.m., and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Ryan, Iowa. Military rites provided by Ryan American Legion #692.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes; 4 sons, Dennis (Kathy) McElligott of Cedar Rapids, David (Jill) McElligott of Bothell, Washington, Joseph McElligott of Marion, and Mark McElligott of Marion; 2 brothers, Robert (Marilyn) McElligott of Waterloo and Dan McElligott of Manchester; 1 sister, Marcy Mottet of Arkansas; 2 grandchildren, Erin & Bailey McElligott; 2 step-grandchildren, Misty (Randy) Newman, and Valerie Walton; 4 great-grandchildren, Josh Newman, Daxton & Carter Berger, and Keeli Walton;
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Lawrence and Edward; 3sisters, Irene Keenan, Patricia Wendell, and Marita Monaghan.
Francis was born October 6, 1920, the son of James R. and Mary E. (Engel) McElligott, in Manchester, Iowa. He graduated from St. John’s High School in Ryan in 1938 and was in the U.S. Navy in the “Seabees” unit during W.W.II and served in South Pacific. Francis married Agnes (Mert) Carlton on May 19, 1944 in San Lorenzo, California. He worked as a mechanic and enjoyed puzzles, reading, and golf.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Francis’ name.
