Francis J. Camizzi, 87, of 2515 Indiana Street SW, Cedar Rapids, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids following a long illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2009, at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Charissa (Allan) Olson of Thompson, and John Camizzi of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Alexander (Holly) Olson of Mason City, Alexis Olson of Cedar Falls, Emily Camizzi of Iowa City and Jordan Camizzi of Iowa City; and a brother, Keith (Lois) Camizzi of Valparaiso, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Grace.
Francis was born July 18, 1921, the son of Michael and Kathryn (Fordyce) Camizzi, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He served with the United States Army Coast Artillery for four years as a New York Harbor Defense Radar Control section Chief during World War II. On July 2, 1950, Francis was united in marriage to Grace Wellner in Springville, Iowa. She died October 10, 1998.
Francis received his BA degree from ICS, Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1956, and his Iowa Architectural License in 1959. He was also licensed in Illinois, Florida and Texas. Francis was a member of NCARB and was associated with the firms of H.R. Green, W.J. Brown and Norman Hatton before opening his own office in the Higley Building for the practice of architecture. Francis then taught the architectural drafting program at Kirkwood Community College for 22 years, retiring at the age of 70.
Francis served on Governor Ray’s Capitol Planning Commission, Church Location and Buildings for the Methodist Cedar Rapids District and Linn County Building Code Board of Appeals. He also served on the Iowa North Central Association High School Accreditation Team.
Francis was a member of Eden UCC Church, American Legion #7 and a life member of NEA. He also was a Taylor Elementary school volunteer and a Linn Area Food Bank volunteer.
