Frances Joan Haennig Vaske, 73, of 1920 McGowan Blvd, Marion, died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa following a sudden diagnosis of brain cancer and pneumonia. Frances had courageously faced diabetes and kidney failure and received dialysis treatments for 2½ years prior to the brain cancer diagnosis.
Visitation is 3:00-7:30 p.m., Sunday, March 16th, at Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion, Iowa. A Rosary will begin at 3:00 and a Catholic vigil service will commence at 6:30 p.m.
Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 17th, 2008, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, Iowa, by Father Greg Bahl. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Dinner is immediately following in the church basement. Burial is 3:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Manchester, Iowa.
Survivors include her husband Laverne; her daughter, Elverna (Marty) Larcabal of Phoenix, AZ, son, Leo (Sharon) Vaske of Camanche, daughter, Florene (Rod) Wiese of Dubuque, son, Louis of Anamosa, daughter, Joanne (Louis) Hawkes of Swisher; six grandchildren, April Vaske, Travis Vaske, Nicholas Vaske, Katherine Vaske, Elizabeth Hawkes and Johnathan Hawkes; and her younger sister, Marian Haennig (Lester) Gudenkauf of Manchester.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She was born October 6, 1934, in Independence, Iowa. She was the oldest daughter of Leo and Florence (Biehl) Haennig of Manchester, Iowa.
She graduated from Manchester Public High School in 1952. She graduated from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids in 1954 receiving her teaching certificate. She also attended Cedar Falls Teacher College. Frances completed Certified Nursing Assistant training in 1976.
Frances taught elementary school in Newhall 1954-1956 and Strawberry Point 1956-1958. She had a deep appreciation of education. She had great affection for children and was loved by her own children dearly.
Frances married Laverne Edwin Vaske in Masonville, Iowa on July 2nd, 1958. This upcoming July would have been their 50th wedding anniversary.
Frances and Laverne Vaske have been active members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Marion, Iowa since 1960.
Frances was a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughter’s of America and Rosary Society Member.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Frances.
