Frances E. Snyder, 88, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Elberon, Iowa, died Sunday, April 15, 2012 at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Services: Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.at Sharon United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Bob Dagit. The family will greet friends from 5-7 on Friday, April 20, 2012 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, and one hour prior to the service, Saturday at the church. Private Graveside: Waltham Cemetery in rural Elberon, Iowa.
Survivors include her children, Nancy (Dan) Jacob, Jewel Nelson, James E. (Sue) Snyder, and John (Jolene) Snyder; 9 grand children; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Waterbeck; a sister-in-law, Isabel Waterbeck; several nieces and nephews; and fellow church parishioners who are brothers and sisters in Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Snyder; her parents; a sister Elsie Vajgrt; brothers, John and Leonard Waterbeck; and sisters-in-law, Julia and Lillian Waterbeck.
Frances was born June 6, 1923, the daughter of Frank and Maggie (Eirp) Waterbeck near Hartwick, Iowa. She married James W. Snyder on October 25, 1943. After living in California for two years, they returned to farming near Elberon, Iowa. While there, she volunteered at the Elberon United Methodist Church, was the Sunday School Director, and served as a 4-H leader in Tama County.
In 1966 they moved to Cedar Rapids and joined the New Creation United Methodist Church. After James died in 1992, she got involved with volunteer work at the American Red Cross and Aging Services, where she was a telephone operator and recording secretary. She spent many joyful hours doing volunteer work with many close and dear friends. She later transferred to Sharon United Methodist Church, where she made many friends who helped her through the last years of her life with their love and caring.
