Frances M. (Haynes) Dennison, 86, of Central City, passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Trinity Center in Des Moines following a bought of pneumonia. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2016, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Central City. Burial will be at Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City, Iowa.
Frances was born in Sabula, Iowa on February 18, 1930, to Stephen and Eva (Babcock) Haynes. She was a 1947 graduate of Sabula High School and earned her BA in Education from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in 1950 with a major in business. It was in calculus class that she met Lorren Dennison.
On August 20, 1949, she married Lorren H. Dennison of Central City. They built their home near there and raised two boys and a girl. She was secretary for her husband’s insurance business until he retired in 1992 and they continued their tax preparation business for another 10 years.
Frances was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, United Church of Christ, and was a den mother for Boy Scout Troop 44. She and Lorren will be remembered for their tandem bicycle which they rode on many trips, including 16 RAGBRAI’s. They also enjoyed traveling to numerous elder hostels. She helped her husband with his large garden, canning and preserving the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor. Bird watching and the outdoors were important to her and she enjoyed their large home library. Frances also authored several family history books. She was rarely found without a book or newspaper up to the time of her death.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen of Cedar Rapids and Russell (Mary) of Rochester, Minnesota; one daughter, Erin (Tom) Hefner of Urbandale; four grandchildren; one sister, Jessie Morlan of Roundup, Montana; and one brother, Richard “Dick” (Nancy) Haynes of Sabula. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister; and one brother. She and her beloved husband Lorren are finally together again.
Memorials may be made to the United Church of Christ in Central City or the Krabbenhof Library in Sabula, Iowa.
