Forrest Leon McCalley, 97, a resident of Rock Ridge Care Center in Shellsburg, formerly of Alburnett, died at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Monday, April 20, 2009. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2009 at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Dan Peterson. The family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009, at the funeral home. Burial: Walker Cemetery in Walker.
Forrest was born on February 14, 1912, in rural Walker, Iowa to Irving and Ruth (Kiser) McCalley, the oldest of six children. He grew up on a farm near Humphrey, Missouri. Forrest and Gertrude Speake were married on February 15, 1937, in Marion, Iowa. They farmed in Linn County, near Walker, Troy Mills, and for the last fifty years at 3801 N. Marion Road, Alburnett. Forrest was a devoted Christian, and a long time member of the Alburnett Christian Church.
Surviving are his two children, Noel McCalley and wife, Cae, of Cedar Rapids, June Balvanz and husband, Larry, of New Providence; five grandchildren, Lynn Balvanz of Eldora, Randi Balvanz of Los Angeles, Michael McCalley of Chicago, Tim McCalley and wife, Emmy, of Pittsboro, Indiana, and Michelle Hamer and husband, Todd, of Gilbert; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Garland, of Salem, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude of fifty-six and a half years; his parents; three brothers; and one sister.
