Forrest E. Durey, Sr., 91, of Manchester, died Saturday morning, December 2, 2006 at the Regional Medical Center, Manchester, following a sudden illness.

Forrest was born in Masonville, Iowa, on November 2, 1915 the son of Floyd & Cora (Rolfe) Durey. He was educated in the rural schools of Delaware and Fayette counties, graduating with the Fayette High School Class of 1935. He attended Iowa State University, studying veterinary medicine. He left school to pioneer the dairy artificial breeding program in the state of Iowa, working mainly in the Iowa County area. Forrest entered the military service on April 11, 1941, serving in China-Burma-India with the Army Air Corps. He was honorably discharged January 30, 1946.
On December 28, 1943 Forrest was united in marriage to Martha E. (Johnson) Durey in West Union, Iowa. Together they lived in Fayette until moving to the family farm in 1950. He loved dairy cows and bred and developed a herd of registered Brown Swiss. During this time he was instrumental in the development of the DHIA testing program in Northeast Iowa and subsequently worked for the program. Later he opened Durey?s D-X in Manchester. He was a 4-H leader for many years. The woods were a place he always felt at home. Forrest could identify any hardwood species and found great solace strolling in Coffins Grove. At home, growing squash, raspberries, asparagus and other produce that he could share was a continuing source of pleasure.
Forrest was a member of the Manchester United Methodist Church for over fifty years and an active member of the Republican Party, serving on the Delaware County Central Committee for many years.
