Florence “Oppy” Opperman Glass died Sunday, January 18, 2015, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Per Florence’s wishes, there will be no service. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2015, where family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Elks Lodge #251, Cedar Rapids.
Florence was born March 17, 1918, in Strawberry Point to Theodore and Alice (Deyo) Opperman. She was the eldest of four children, including one sister, Helen, and two brothers, Donald and Kenneth. Florence graduated from Oelwein High School, then moved to Cedar Rapids to enter nurses training at St. Luke’s Hospital, which is where she met her husband, Wilbert (Bill) Glass. They married October 9, 1937.
Their family included three sons, Lynn, deceased 1997 (Carol) of Nevada, Larry (Donna) of Colgate, Wisconsin, and Lyle (Diane) of Atkins; six grandchildren, Kelly Glass of Ames, Julie (Jim) Lauridsen of Urbandale, Gregory (Shelly) Glass of Fruitland, Maryland, Jody McFarland of Atkins, Jeffrey Glass of Waukee and Brad (Laura) Glass of Newark, Delaware. She also had several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well.
Florence was a nurse for St. Luke’s Hospital and for Dr. R.L. Sedlacek, general surgeon. She also volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital (mostly in the mammography department), Brucemore, Aid to Women and her church quilting group. In 2011, she was named Senior Volunteer for United Way while working for Aid to Women. She also received the State of Iowa Governor’s Award for Volunteerism.
She was also active in the following groups: Sharon Methodist Church, Elks Lodge #251 and Elks Auxiliary, Circle of Women, Christian Women, Indian Creek Nature Center Guild, Widows and Widowers and Sassy Sisters of Red Hat Society.
Florence enjoyed sewing quilts for Project Linus at the UI Hospital. She made quilts for church bazaars and numerous quilts for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed working with flowers and other outdoor gardening projects and reading.
