Flora Della Hamling Zieser, 98, formerly of Walker, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at Halcyon House, Washington, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 2, 2015, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Walker, where the family will greet friends one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial: Sacred Heart Cemetery, Walker. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Zieser (Kay) of Iowa City, Iowa, and Wayne (Julie) Zieser of Washington, Iowa; five grandchildren, Mike, Jerry, Todd, David and Brian Zieser; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a stillborn daughter, Flora Elizabeth; her husband, Lawrence; two brothers, Matthew and Nicholas; half-brother, John Hamling; two sisters, Louise Nolte and Armedia Zieser. She was the last one living of her brothers and sisters.
Flora Della Hamling was born February 14, 1917, in Stahl, Missouri, to Nicholas and Mary (Zanter) Hamling. Flora graduated from Alburnett High School in 1935. On December 30, 1937, she married Lawrence John Zieser in Walker, Iowa. They farmed for ten years and owned and operated Jack Sprat retail grocery store in Walker for 25 years.
Flora enjoyed board games, crossword puzzles and loved to bowl and garden. An excellent cook and housekeeper, she also was an avid Cub’s fan. Flora was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and very proud that her sons were veterans of the United States Military.
