Ferna M. Garner

Ferna M. Garner, 71, of 640 22nd Avenue SW, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in her home, following a lengthy illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Sharon United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Gary Dobbins. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2003, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her husband, Paul; three children, Mike (Kandy) Garner of Cedar Rapids, Sue (Bob) Huber of Cedar Falls, and Tim Garner of Ames. She has been a wonderful Grandma to four grandchildren, Karey and Quintin Garner and Chad and Andrea Huber.
Also surviving are four sisters, Hilda Nebergall of St. David, Illinois, Betty Helterbran of Lockridge, Iowa, Helen Willis of Ottumwa, Iowa, and June Jennings of Wapello, Iowa; and a brother, Monroe Lingenfelter of Lockridge, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant son, Jonathan.
Ferna was born May 6, 1932, the daughter of Henry and Fern (Harper) Lingenfelter, in Elmwood, Illinois. A graduate from Mount Pleasant High School in 1950, she was united in marriage to Paul Garner on February 14, 1953. Ferna retired from the Cedar Rapids Schools Food Service. She was a member of the Sharon United Methodist Church, VFW Auxillary, Early Ford V8 Club, Model A Club and AACA. Ferna also was a volunteer at the Indian Creek Nature Center with the Blue Bird Nesting Program. She took great joy in monitoring the nest boxes and keeping track of the newly hatched baby birds. Ferna?s biggest source of happiness was the time she spent with her grandchildren and family. She will be missed by all who loved her.
