Evelyn “Evie” L. Karasek, 90, a resident of Mercy Hallmar Residential Care, died there Friday, August 24, 2007, following a lengthy illness. Graveside Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Gary Shank. Family will greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Evelyn leaves to her memory her nephews and nieces, Albert F. (Alba) Shank II of Charlottesville, Virginia, Doug (Kim) Anderson and Kim’s sister, Vicki Schmitt, all of White City, Kansas, Rev. Gary Shank of Monmouth, Illinois, Dave Karasek of Phoenix, Arizona and nieces, Pam and Linda, and her esteemed and much beloved sister-in-law, Norma Shank of Kewanee, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 65 years, Leonard; and two brothers, Albert and Thurmond Shank.
Evelyn was born February 25, 1917, the daughter of George and Helen (Smith) Shank, in Tipton, Iowa. A 1938 graduate of Tipton High School, she attended Cedar Rapids Business College, where she was educated as a secretary and office assistant. On September 1, 1940, Evelyn was united in marriage to Leonard J. Karasek in Cedar Rapids. He died August 4, 2006.
During her life, Evelyn was employed as a secretary for the Rinderknecht Construction Company and as a clerk at the Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company in Cedar Rapids. She had a wide circle of friends and family. An avid golfer, Evelyn also enjoyed crocheting and needlepoint. She was an accomplished crotchetier, having constructed many fine articles of needlework for her family and friends.
Additionally, Evelyn was a Red Cross volunteer, having served her family and community in this capacity during World War II and for some years after. She also was an accomplished bridge player and spent many afternoons among family and friends enjoying the finer points of bridge and card playing in general.
Evelyn is best remembered by her joyous outlook on life in general, her never-ending affection for her family and friends and her generous, outgoing personality which enriched the lives of all who came into contact with her.
