Eunice Irene Shay, 91, formerly of Central City, died Tuesday, October 4, 2005, at Trinity Lutheran Nursing Home in Merriam, Kansas, following a brief illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 7, 2005, at First United Methodist Church in Central City by Rev. Nick Needham. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City. Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery in Central City.
Survivors include two daughters, JoAnne Shay of Merriam, Kansas, and Deborah (Rick) Whitworth of Bellevue, Nebraska; a brother, Chuck (Norma) Gress of Cedar Falls; a sister, Phyllis Stankovik of Mesa, Arizona; five grandchildren, Bobette, Gregory, Kimberly, Sean, and Kevin; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis; her parents, Claude and Tena; a son, Richard Shay; and four brothers, Gaylord, Harold, Lyle, and Kenneth Gress.
Eunice was born on August 4, 1914, in Clermont, Iowa, to Claude and Tena (Benson) Gress. She graduated from Clermont High School in 1932 and then from Cedar Rapids Business College in 1933. She also attended the University of Iowa from 1933 to 1934. Eunice was united in marriage to Francis L. Shay on November 7, 1934, in Anamosa. He died in February of 1982. Eunice was a homemaker and a past member of First United Methodist Church in Central City.
