Gene was born August 4, 1941 in Lebanon, South Dakota, the son of Raymond and Mary (Gutenkauf Schoeberl. After moving to Iowa and growing up on farms near Toddville and Walker, he began his career with Great Plains Supply Company. Overall, he worked for over 50 years in the lumber business, mostly with Great Plains and subsequently with Gilcrest/Jewett Lumber Company. He moved up the ranks in Great Plains and moved from Walker to Manchester, and back to Walker as Store Manager, and finally to Marion, where he managed from 1977 until he retired in 2007.

Gene loved his family, took great pride in his work, and was well liked by many in the community. Gene also loved to fish when he was younger, play cards with family and friends, and work on the acreage he shared with Sharon in Marion.

Gene will be missed greatly by the family that loved him and the people who called him ‘friend’. His great sense of humor, generosity, and caring disposition will be remembered by those who knew him and we know he now enjoys the peace he deserves.
Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous or St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion in Gene’s memory.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids for their special care of Gene.
