Eugene C. Schanbeck, 74, of Manchester, Iowa, formerly of Delaware, died Saturday, September 10, 2005 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, following a sudden illness.

Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester. Private graveside services will be at a later date in Pine View Cemetery, rural Delaware.

Eugene was born September 9, 1931 near Delaware, the son of Ernest D. & Dorothy M. (Ocker) Schanbeck. He attended school in Delaware. Eugene joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. Upon his discharge, Eugene returned at the family sawmill. He later started his own trucking and mechanic business. Eugene retired in 1998 and moved to Manchester this past year.

Eugene was a member of the American Legion. He played the accordion and called square dances. He enjoyed working with horses and driving a stage coach in area parades.

Eugene is survived by four children, Terry (Mark) Bader of Monticello, Marilyn Schanbeck of Delaware, Clifford (Kelly) Schanbeck of Dyersville, and Lydia Schanbeck of Clermont; four grandchildren; two brothers, Eldon (Sharon) Schanbeck of Delaware and Pat (Bernice) Schanbeck of Winthrop, Iowa; and one sister, Betty (Louie) Woock of Waterloo.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest & Dorothy Schanbeck; and a daughter, Gena Schanbeck.
