Eugene Harold Opperman, 95, of Marion, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 15, 2017, at Pinicon Place in Anamosa. The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, located at 915 27th Street in Marion. Funeral Services will begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the church, conducted by Timothy Bickel, followed with military honors. Committal services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at Guttenberg City Cemetery in Guttenberg, conducted by Pastor Gregory Williamson.

Eugene was born February 13, 1922, in Strawberry Point, Iowa, the son of Edgar and Bessie (Palmer) Opperman. He graduated from Strawberry Point High School, Wartburg College, and the University of Iowa with his Masters in Secondary Education. Eugene served in the United States Navy during World War II. In Guttenberg on December 26, 1948, he was united in marriage to Betty Jane Biederman. Eugene was employed as a guidance counselor with Thornridge High School in Dolton, Illinois from 1959 – 1985. He was also in charge of their summer school and night school programs. Eugene resided in South Holland, Illinois for more than 40 years before moving back to Iowa in 2005.

Eugene is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty of Marion; one son, David Opperman of Marion; and one brother, Ivan (Marilyn) Opperman of Monticello.

He was preceded in death parents; one son, Roger Opperman; and three brothers.
