Eugene “Gene” Gonsales, 78, of Marion, died Friday, June 27, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Shirley; children, Shirlene (Bert) Robinson, William (Debbie) Simpson, Jeff (Kim) Gonsales, Mike Gonsales, and Jim Gonsales; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Gonsales; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Leola Gonsales; and a grandson, Ben.
Gene was born July 16, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Charles and Alta (Hollingsworth) Gonsales. On December 31, 1960, he was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Clark in Cedar Rapids. Gene served in the United States Army. He worked as an accountant for the railroad for 41 years.
Gene was a member at First Christian Church, the VFW, the Railroad Club, the Striper Club, and the Rod and Reel Club. He was passionate about fishing and hunting, especially with his family. Gene was a big football fan. His favorite teams were the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Vikings.
