Eugene “Cheno” Dyrland, 88, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 26, 2013, at West Ridge Care Center, Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013 at First Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Pastor Kay Slocum. Family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cedar Rapids. There will be a private committal service held at a later date. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth (Zier) Dyrland of Cedar Rapids; children, Doug (Marilyn) Dyrland of Cedar Rapids and Deborah K. Roman of Anamosa, Iowa; grandchildren, Kevin Dyrland and Laura Dyrland (Page Covington); sister, Colleen Brownlie; sisters-in-law, Alice Freeman and Karen Dyrland; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilmer and Geturah (Larson) Dyrland; brother, Donald Dyrland; brothers-in-law, Ray Freeman and Robert Brownlie; and infant grandsons, David Dyrland and Todd Dyrland.
Eugene was born on March 28, 1924, in Norway, Iowa, son of Gilmer and Geturah Dyrland. He graduated from Norway High School where he played baseball, and attended University of Iowa. Eugene served in the United States Marine Corp. during World War II participating in the battles of Tinian, Saipan, and Iwo Jima. On February 14, 1948, he married Ruth Zier in Cedar Rapids. He worked at Iowa Electric for 33 years retiring as a supervisor. He enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, camping and feeding the wildlife. Eugene especially loved spending time with his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or First Lutheran Church.
