Ethel Louise Pfranger, 102, formerly of Manchester, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2013 in Trinidad, Texas.

Services for Ethel Louise Pfranger will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 3, 2014 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home, Manchester, IA with Rev. Dr. Jean Rabary of First Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 2, 2014 at the Funeral Home and one hour before services on Friday. Burial will be at the Cass Township Cemetery at Strawberry Point.

Ethel was born October 4, 1911 in Pueblo, CO to James Elza and Margaret Louise (Ingwersen) Cummins. Ethel graduated from Strawberry Point High School in May, 1933. She was married to Ervin J. Pfranger on June 1, 1933 at Davenport, IA. Ethel and Ervin farmed near Arlington and Maynard until 1948, then lived in Lamont, Strawberry Point and Cedar Rapids before retiring to Manchester in 1973.

Ethel was a cook in the public school systems in both Strawberry Point and Cedar Rapids. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Manchester. Ethel was also a life member of VFW Auxiliary #6637 and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Ethel did extensive genealogy research while a member of the Manchester Genealogy Society for 15 years. Ethel was one of the first volunteers for the Camp Courageous garage sale fund-raiser and worked with them for 25 years. She also sewed quilts at her church and made hundreds of lap robes and quilts for the VFW Auxiliary.

Ethel moved to Texas in 1996 where she was an active member of the Senior Citizens of Gun Barrel City. There she enjoyed crafts, games and serving meals. Ethel was an avid antique and stamp collector. She always loved gardening and raising beautiful flowers that she shared with anyone. While living in Texas she made several hundred lap robes herself and donated them to local nursing homes and to the homebound people on the Meals on Wheels routes.

Survivors include one son, Delavan (Judy) San Angelo, TX; one daughter, Rita (Roy) Trinidad, TX; six grandchildren, Jennifer Frank, Dallas, TX, Brian Frank, Littleton, CO, Robert (Lisa) Pfranger, Cedar Rapids, IA, Roger (Jadon) Pfranger, Rockwall, TX, Bradley (Jessica) Pfranger, Gallatin, TN, Kim (Travis) Hutchinson, Chattanooga, TN and nine great-grandchildren

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ervin; one son, Albert; three brothers; two half-brothers and two sisters.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the “Wow A Cow” fund through First Lutheran Church in Manchester.
