Esther Irene Ries, 84, of Greeley, died at home Wednesday, March 10, 2010.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 15, 2010 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester by Rev. John R. Flaherty. Family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Sunday, March 14, 2010 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester with a rosary service at 2:00 p.m. Additional visitation from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Monday before Mass of Christian Burial at the church. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Greeley.
Esther was born August 19, 1925 in Luxemburg, IA, the daughter of Florian and Mary (Schulte) Steffen. She graduated from the Oneida High School. On October 22, 1947, Esther was united in marriage to Donald F. Ries at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Greeley. The couple settled and farmed near Greeley where they raised their family.
Esther was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Greeley, St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of America in Manchester. She was a faith-filled woman, rarely missing mass and taught religious education for many years. Esther will be remembered for being a Champion Pie Baker, her wonderful cinnamon bread and peanut butter eggs. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, tending to her strawberry patch, flowers, and mowing her own lawn. She loved farm life.
Esther is survived by five children: Lynn Miranda of Manchester, Steve (Deb) Ries of Earlville, Clyde (Barb) Ries of Delaware, Rose Hanson of Cedar Rapids, and Mark (Laura) Ries of Toddville; sixteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Edmund Steffen of Delhi; sisters-in-law, Delores Steffen, Julia Ries, Mabel Kronlage and Alice Olberding.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Ries in 2005; her parents, Florian and Mary Steffen; siblings, Clarence Steffen, Albert Steffen, Francis Klein, and Clara Burbridge.
