Esther L. Heaton, 95, a resident of Meadow Ridge Residential Living Center in Anamosa, formerly of Central City, died at the care center, Monday, May 12, 2003, following a brief illness. Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City by Rev. Jonna Jensen. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery in Prairieburg.

Survivors include her daughter, Arlene Holub and husband Robert of Prairieburg; a son, John E. (Jack) Heaton and wife Sandra of Iowa City; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and a step-grandson.

Esther was born July 21, 1907, the daughter of Ed and Lena (Paul) Shimerda in Wyoming, Iowa. She graduated from Anamosa High School in 1924 and attended Cedar Rapids Business College. Esther married Leo Heaton on August 2, 1930. They moved to Central City in 1936 and were in business many years owning Heaton?s Hatchery and Dairy and the Town Theatre & Shogrill in Central City.

Esther was a member of the United Church of Christ, being active in Womens Fellowship and Monday Club. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters and Order of the Eastern Star.
