Esther Julia Goodmonson Sharbo, 88, a resident of Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids, formerly of Marion, died Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at St. Luke?s Hospital. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 2003, at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Marion by Rev. Dennis Johnson. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. Private family committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Dr. David Sharbo and wife Karen of Park Rapids, Minnesota, Diane Paul and husband Dan of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Paul Sharbo and wife Pam of Tucson, Arizona, and Sally Reck and husband Steve of Marion; a sister, Becky Sewell of Tucson, Arizona; two brothers, Paul Goodmonson of Black Butte, Oregon and Thomas Goodmonson of San Diego, California; nine grandchildren, Eric and Peter Sharbo, Danny and David Paul, Melissa Zettler, Tonja Fiske and Amanda, Kirsten and Andrew Reck; and nine great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Emily, Allyson and Serina Sharbo, Rachel, Jordan, Johnny and Joshua Paul and Reegan Fiske.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters; and a brother.
Esther was born November 16, 1914, in Roland, Iowa, to Rev. Thomas A. and Beatrice (Nelson) Goodmonson. She graduated from Slayton High School in Slayton, Minnesota, and then from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1936 with a bachelor?s degree in English. Esther attended graduate school at the University of Iowa where she studied library science. She married Arthur Johnson Sharbo on November 26, 1937, in Slayton, Minnesota. Esther taught English for three years at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids and was the librarian at Linn-Mar High School in Marion for fourteen years.
Esther was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Marion and AAUW. She loved books, music, flowers and spending time with her family.
