Erwin M. "Scoop? Scovel, 72, of Delhi, Iowa, died Monday, January 20, 2003, at his residence following a sudden illness. Services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, January 23, at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa, by the Rev. David H. Wagner, Sr. Burial with full military rites will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Delhi, Iowa.
Scoop was born on May 16, 1930 in Delhi, Iowa, to Orin D. and Jessie Bensley Scovel. He was raised in Delhi and attended school there. While growing up, Scoop worked as a farm hand for area farmers. On June 27, 1947 he entered the Army Air Corp where he served, as a sheet metalist. Scoop served in Korea, on two tours in Vietnam, in Japan and in the Philippines. He also spent time in Germany and was stationed at various bases in the United States. In May of 1954, he married Deloris N. Page in Hoopeston, Illinois. Scoop retired from the service in 1970. In 1971, he went to work for General Services Administration as a guard in Green River Ordinance Depot in Amboy, Illinois, later transferring to the Rock Island Arsenal. Scoop retired in 1993 and moved to Delhi, Iowa.
Scoop was a member of the American Legion in Delhi. He liked to travel to see the sights. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, old westerns and war movies. Scoop was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing at the Delhi dam.
Scoop is survived by a son, David (Ronda) Scovel of Spencer, Iowa; two daughters, Dawn (John) Gasso of Sterling, Illinois, and Tina (Steve) Smith of Rock Falls, Illinois; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a half-brother, John Maulson of Dubuque, Iowa; a half-sister, Jessie Bors of Payette, Idaho; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Scovel of Sterling, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Rosie Maulson of Delhi, Iowa.
Scoop was preceded in death by his parents, Orin D. & Jessie Scovel; two sons, Joseph and Terry Scovel; and a daughter, Sherry Balsley; a half brother, Clyde Maulson; and a half sister, Lucille Croskey.
