Emery "Vern? Kohl, 74, of Atkins, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, in his home, of cancer. Services: 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Dr. Leonard Ransom. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at the funeral home. Inurnment: 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2006, Lisbon Cemetery, Lisbon.
Survivors include his wife, Lela; his children, Vernon (Angel) Kohl of Neosho, Missouri, Teresa (Thomas) Dvorsky of Brooklyn, Iowa, Kathy (Todd) Thomsen and Christine (Gary) Hart, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his stepchildren, Dennis (Pam) Carte of Green City, Missouri, David (Kris) Carte, Cathleen Vollbrecht, all of Atkins, Karen (Joe) Jackson of Lathrop, Missouri, and Kevin (Barb) Carte of Williamsburg, Iowa; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; 7 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a brother, Norman Kohl of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Maxine Jones and Mary Jean Vaan Slyke; a brother, Gaylord Kohl; and a grandson, Christopher Ray Thomsen.
Vern was born June 12, 1931, the son of Emery and Helen Weaver Kohl, in Lisbon, Iowa. He served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On August 31, 1996, he married Lela Knight in Atkins, Iowa. Vern worked for Square D in Cedar Rapids. A member of the Cedar Hills Community Church and the American Legion Hanford Post 5, he liked to go fishing, hunting and boating. Vern also enjoyed yard work and all star wrestling.
Memorials may be made to the Atkins Fire Department in memory of Vern.
