Elzo Ray Soden, 83, of 140 35th Street Drive SE, formerly of Marion and Urbana, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, Sunday, September 21, 2003, at his home, following a long illness. Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, September 25, 2003, at Kenwood Park United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids by Rev. Laura Smith and Rev. Jay Miller. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial: Urbana Cemetery.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of sixty-three years, Mary; two loving daughters, Judy (Bruce) Harford of Marion and Jean (Robert) Fredsall of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Homer, Frank, Dale and Harold.

Elzo was born March 11, 1920, the son of Ray and Noreen (Combs) Soden in Grass Lake Township, Minnesota. On April 9, 1940, he married Mary Riffey in Urbana. Elzo farmed for many years and was a custodian at Marion Independent Schools for twenty-one years before retiring in 1982. Elzo will be long remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. Elzo was a member of Kenwood Park United Methodist Church.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Voights, Dr. Payvandi, the staff at Mercy Medical Center Dialysis Unit, and Mercy Hospice, as well as help and prayers from Elzo?s many friends and family members.
