Elsie Marie Harrell, 50, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Memorial Service: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010, at River of Life Ministries in Cedar Rapids. Inurnment: Center Point Cemetery. Arrangements with Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Center Point.
Survivors include her son, Joe Harrell of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Steven Vopalka and Jimmy Vopalka, both of Center Point; and five sisters, Mary Reddick of Cedar Rapids, Debbie Vopalka of Cedar Rapids, Theresa Vopalka of Center Point, Rose (Cliff) Beauregard of Center Point, and Lori (Fuad) Hudaib of Atlanta, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Charlotte (Castle) Vopalka; infant twin sons; an infant daughter, Amanda; a brother, Stanley Vopalka; and a sister, Julianna Vopalka.
Elsie was born August 7, 1959, the daughter of Joseph and Charlotte (Castle) Vopalka, in Cedar Rapids. She graduated from Center Point High School in 1979 and attended Hamilton College of Business for two years. Elsie joined the United States Navy and served from 1980-1985. She married Willie Harrell and they later divorced. Elsie had worked for Twin City Optical, as a housekeeper, Pearson's Technology, and Vision 4 Less.
She was a member of River of Life Ministries in Cedar Rapids. She was strong in her faith in God. Elsie lived for her son, Joe. She loved to read mystery novels, do puzzles and crafts.
