Elmer C. Rompot, 91, a resident of the Promise House, Hiawatha, Iowa, died there Saturday, October 11, 2008, following a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Michael Kleeberger and Pastor Scott Dossett. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Private family burial at Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with honors by the Cedar Rapids Fire Department Honor Guard and VFW Post 788.
Survivors include his son, Roger (Susan) Rompot of Marion; four grandchildren, Michael (Kelly) Abbott of Los Gatos, California, Ryan (Tracy) Abbott of San Jose, California, Nathan (Marie) Rompot of Marion and Zachary Rompot of Marion; three great grandchildren, Lillian, Klayton and Olivia and one great granddaughter on the way.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alma; and daughter, Sheryl Abbott.
Elmer was born February 21, 1917, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of Charles and Rose (Bulicek) Rompot. On August 28, 1940, he was united in marriage to Alma Nove at Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945, during World War II, attaining the rank of Sergeant, and received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and POW Medals. Elmer was a fireman for 27 years with the Cedar Rapids Fire Department followed by eight years as a custodian for the Cedar Rapids Schools.
Elmer belonged to Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, Cedar Rapids Fire Department Good Fellowship, Cedar Rapids Fire Department Welfare Association and the Veterans for Foreign Wars Post #788. He enjoyed a love of sports.
