Elmer L. Rasmussen, 87, of Manchester, died Sunday, February 12, 2006 at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester following a long related illness.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 16, 2006 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Elmer was born August 31, 1918 in Decorah, the son of Lars & Dena (Thorson) Rasmussen. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1933 at the age of 15. He first studied to be a pastor at Luther College in Decorah before moving to Chicago and studying business at Northwestern. Elmer was a manager at Chicago Printed Stream (now known as the Chicago Tribune) for seven years. In 1943, Elmer was united in marriage to Margaret F. Owens in Cresco. They operated a café in Michigan before moving back to Iowa, first to Cresco, then Manchester. Elmer was a salesman for Moorman Feed and then BP Seeds. In 1963, he managed Becker Roofing in Cedar Rapids and later sold Walnut Grove Feed/WR Grace Feed in Manchester. Elmer retired in 1980.
Elmer was active in the Republican Party. Elmer enjoyed fishing, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, spending winters in Florida and spending time with his children, grandchildren and friends. He was a wonderful father and husband and was loved by all his children.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Margaret Rasmussen of Manchester; three children, Karen (David) Mesch of Henderson, NV, Frances (Ron) Roe of Cedar Rapids and Richard Rasmussen of Cedar Rapids; and eight grandchildren.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Larry Rasmussen; and six sisters.
