Elmer Justin “Al” Brandt, 98, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of East Dubuque, Illinois, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017, at Winslow House Care Center, Marion. Service: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Elmer was born on June 22, 1919, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Justin and Lillian (Plein) Brandt. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. Before entering the Army, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps at Backbone State Park in Strawberry Point, Iowa. Elmer served in the Army during WWII, spending time in Okinawa and Guam while building airfields for the Army Corps of Engineers. On May 19, 1949, in East Dubuque, Illinois, Elmer and Ida (Hesseling) were united in marriage. Elmer worked for many years for the Milwaukee Railroad, retiring in 1979. Elmer spent his last two and a half years at the Winslow House Care Center in Marion, where he enjoyed playing Bingo, feeding the birds, listening to music and singing along whether he knew the words or not.
Survivors include his daughters, Jane (Wayne) Lovstuen of Kirksville, Missouri and Barbara Brandt of Marion, Iowa; grandchildren, Sharon (Chanh) Lovstuen-Nguyen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Brenda (Nathan Morrison) Lovstuen of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Kirin and Dakota Nguyen; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ida; and sisters, Velva Johnson and Corrine Brown.
