Elliott E. "Alex? Sauser, 91, of Ryan, Iowa, died Sunday morning, October 5, 2003, at the Regional Medical Center, Manchester, after a brief illness.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ryan, Iowa with Rev. Roger McKinstry officiating. Inurnment will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Manchester, Iowa. Full military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #692 of Ryan, Iowa. Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester is in charge of arrangements.
Alex was born on September 29, 1912, the son of Paul and Orpha (Schoonover) Sauser in Prairieburg, Iowa. He graduated from Grant High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Alex worked at his father?s store, Sauser?s Hardware, in Manchester until he entered the United States Navy. He served on Manus Island in the South Pacific during World War II. He returned to Manchester, Iowa and married Waynetta Irvin. In March of 1946, Alex purchased the hardware store in Ryan, Iowa. Waynetta died in January of 1970. On May 1, 1976 Alex was united in marriage to Edna V. Mattson-Karteus at Peace Lutheran Church in Ryan, Iowa. Alex was a West Delaware School bus driver for twenty years. He remained in the hardware store business until his failing health caused him to retire in March of 2001. Alex?s sons continue the business today.
Alex was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Ryan. He was a past-member of the Ryan Fire Department and the Ryan City Council. Alex was a member of the Ryan American Legion Post #692 and a charter member of the Ryan Lions and Community Clubs. He also enjoyed fishing.
Alex is survived by his wife, Edna of Ryan, Iowa; two sons, Mike Sauser of Ryan, Iowa and Terry Sauser & friend, Revette Merritt of Hiawatha, Iowa; a step-son, Bill Karteus of Marion, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Sauser of Ryan, Iowa; three grandchildren, Bryan and wife Jessica of Bellevue, Iowa; Michelle and Heather Sauser of Ryan, Iowa; and a sister, Edith Chonklin of Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Waynetta Sauser; and a brother, Duane "Zip? Sauser.
