Elgie Charles "Junior? Garthwaite, 92, of Garnett Place in Cedar Rapids, formerly of 2180 A Ave., Marion, died at his home Saturday, April 28, 2007. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, by Vicki Standley. Graveside services: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.
Junior was born January 31, 1915, in South Bend, Indiana, the son of Elgie A. and Edith (Auten) Garthwaite. He moved to Bloomington, Wisconsin, in 1919, where he attended school until his family moved to Dubuque in 1923. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1933.
Junior was married to Agnes Bremer on February 10, 1940, in Dubuque and was employed at A.Y. McDonalds in Dubuque for five years. In 1943, he moved to Bloomington, Wisconsin, where he farmed until 1975, when he moved to Marion and worked at J & R Apco from 1975 to 1986.
Junior was a past member and past Worshipful Master of Bloomington Masonic Lodge A.F.& A.M. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion.
He was an avid fisherman, euchre player and enjoyed woodworking. Junior was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed dearly by those who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Agnes; a daughter, Mary Elaine Weber (Vern) of Marion; three sons, Duane (Linda), Gary (Betty) and Elgie (Mary), all of Marion; ten grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Armond.
A memorial fund has been established for St. Luke?s Hospice or First United Methodist Church in Marion.
