Eleanor Zach Hlavacek, 95, passed away at Willow Gardens Care Center, Marion, Thursday, February 13, 2003. Services: 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 17, 2003, by Deacon Bill Cisler at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 2 - 4 p.m., Sunday, February 16, 2003, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
She is survived by her son John, her special "daughter? Joyce; her grandchildren, John and Joe Hlavacek, Diane Moore, Mary Frank and Jayne Crabdree; their spouses and 10 great-grandchildren; and a dear sister "Cookie? Politis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Hlavacek in 1988; her parents, brothers; Joe, George, Milo, Louis and Wes Zach; and sisters, Anna Novak, Agnus Stanek and Carrie Beranek.
Eleanor Zach was born January 7, 1908, on a farm south west of Swisher to Joseph and Anna Rejman Zach, the ninth child in a family of 10, five brothers and four sisters. At a Cou Falls rural Swisher Dance, July 4, 1923, at age 15, she met John A. Hlavacek, of rural South Amana. They danced and dated thru the roaring 20?s and married on October 10, 1928. Their son John, was born a year later. The dirty 30?s depression forced them from a farming career start to city life in Cedar Rapids. Eleanor retired from Cedar Rapids Police force in 1973, where she served as women?s matron and bicycle license registrar.
Eleanor loved nature, hunting, fishing, growing vegetables and flowers. She has special touch growing roses. Garden clubs made annual visits to her flora. Birds and animals found her their friend, especially, frogs, toads, chipmunks and owls. She was the selfless role model of a mother, grandmother and friend.
Special thanks to the very personal loving care of her Dr. Brian Nelson and the wonderful staff of the Great Willow Gardens Care Center. We, the family of Eleanor are overwhelmed with warmth and depth of their love and dedication.
