Eldee “Dee” Bowers, 90, of Toddville, died Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at Mercy Hallmar in Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 9, 2009, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha by Rev. Dan Krueger. The family will greet friends from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Burial: Dunkard Cemetery, rural Toddville with military honors.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of Toddville; three children, Ron (Sherill) Bowers of Toddville, Diana Smith of Katy, Texas, and Roxanne Smith of Toddville; seven grandchildren, Heather, Ronda, Brandon, Nicole, Brett, Riley and Racquel; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Wilbur, Don, Elzo, Ray, Roy, Harry and Henry Bowers, and Bessie Erickson.

Dee was born May 23, 1918, the son of John and Molly (Ellis) Bowers in rural Toddville. He graduated from Toddville High School in 1936 and attended Coe College before serving with the Army Air Corp during WWII. On April 12, 1942, he married Helen L. Estling in St. Louis, Missouri. Dee owned and operated Bowers Saw Mill in Toddville for over fifty years.

Dee was a very giving person, who was proud of and gave generously to his family, his friends, and his community. He was an overall lover of sports, but will best be remembered as a High School All-American basketball player and a member of the Toddville town baseball teams.

Dee was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha, American Legion Post No. 674 of Toddville, and a thirty year member of the Alburnett Community School Board.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Dee’s memory.
