Edwin Oscar Garlinghouse, 80, of Cedar Rapids died Thursday November 8, 2007 following a long battle with lung cancer. Memorial Service will be held at 11 am Monday November 12, 2007, at Faith Lutheran Church, located at the intersection of Boysen Road and Alburnett Road in Marion. Visitation with family will begin at 10 am on Monday at Faith Lutheran Church.
Ed is survived by his wife of 61 years Betsy Jean, three sons Peter (Linda), Dale (Barb), and Paul (Leann), four grandchildren Betsy (Brett) Hoffman, Spencer Hinker-Garlinghouse, Zachary Garlinghouse, and Joshua Garlinghouse, a sister-in-law Mary (Carol) Midcalf, and fifteen nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Margaret, three brothers, Dean Hamad, Merle Hamad, Ray Hamad, and two sisters, Amy Steinhaus and Margaret Fansler.
Ed was born March 4, 1927 in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. He married Betsy Jean Anderson on April 27, 1946. Ed was employed for 38 years by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, the Ann Arbor Railroad, and the Iowa Interstate Railroad. Ed began his railroad career as a locomotive fireman on hand-fired steam engines, and retired as a Superintendent of the Iowa Interstate Railroad. He also served as an engineer, a Road Foreman of Equipment and a Supervisor of Training.
Ed served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S Massachusetts during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 298, VFW Post 788, BPOE (Elks), Masonic Lodge #639, Scottish Rite, El Kahir Shrine, and Faith Lutheran Church.
Cooking, fishing, golfing, and camping were activities Ed enjoyed. Ed was an accomplished story teller and appreciated all the time spent with his family and close friends.
Ed will be deeply missed by family and friends.
