Ed was born in Alburnett, Iowa, June 12, 1928, and was raised on several farms in Linn County. He and his father provided custom oat and wheat threshing in the county using two steam engine driven threshing machines. After graduation from Alburnett High School, he worked in farming until joining the United States Army Air Forces in 1946. He served in Germany as a radar specialist in an intelligence gathering mission in Europe.
After completing his duty in 1948, Ed studied at the Milwaukee (Wisconsin) School of Engineering. In 1951, he began a career as an electronics engineer and later was in quality control management at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. It was at Collins Radio that Ed met his wife, Betty Poole, and they married in 1954. It was from Rockwell/Collins that Ed retired in 1989 while they lived in Florida after a period of time during which Ed and Betty owned a hardware store in Boone, Iowa.
Prior to moving to Cornwall Manor in Pennsylvania, they lived 24 years following retirement in Abingdon, Virginia, where Ed was active in maintaining a hiking trail called the Creeper Trail by constructing benches. Ed’s hobbies included woodworking and a love of aviation. He had a private pilot license and owned a Piper Tripacer in the early 1970’s.
