Edward J. Hruska, 85, of 193 22nd Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, died Friday, December 28, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Tom McDermott. The family will greet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a vigil service will begin at 6:00 p.m. Burial: St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary; his children, Sharon Wendt, Susan (Jim) Teahen, both of Marion, Joe Hruska and Jeff (Kendal) Hruska, both of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Wendi (Shannon) Falb, Kristi (Dan) Wendt-Steichen, J. J. (Jennifer) Wendt, James (Jacqueline) Teahen, Melissa Teahen and Megan Teahen; a sister, Evelyn Maciejewsky of Escondido, California; and a brother, Robert (Jeanne) Hruska of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, Barry Wendt, and brother-in-law, Rudy Maciejewsky.
Edward was born December 7, 1922, the son of Joseph and Bessie (Cermak) Hruska, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A 1941 Wilson High School graduate, he served with the United States Army during World War II. On September 27, 1945, Edward was united in marriage to Mary Novak at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He worked at Quaker Oats Company, retiring after 43 years of service.
Edward was a member of the St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church, Elk’s Club and American Legion Hanford Post 5. He enjoyed nature, fishing, loved watching sports, especially Kirkwood women’s basketball, and most of all, loved spending time with his grandchildren.
