Edna J. Simons, 79, of Manchester died Friday afternoon, July 9, 2004 at St. Luke?s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 14 at the Community Congregational Church in Manchester by Rev. Kurt Pasko. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 on Tuesday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Manchester and one hour before services on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Manchester.
Edna was born near Manchester on July 24, 1924 the daughter of Ira E. and Jenny L. (Grapes) Pohlman. She attended Manchester area schools. Upon reaching adulthood, she worked as a waitress in the old "Coffee Den,? "Elite? and "Hi Ho? Cafés in Manchester. It was during this time that Edna met and dated Ralph C. Simons. They were wed on October 8, 1950 at the old Methodist parsonage in Manchester.
After having her children and raising them into their school years, Edna cleaned the medical and dental offices of local professionals. She later took on domestic duties for friends and acquaintances within the church and community. Edna enjoyed playing cards and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. She was a prolific photographer and collector of family pictures.
Edna?s interests always centered upon her family. She was most proud that she was able to care for her husband during the years of his declining health. Ralph died August 27, 2002.
Edna is survived by her children, Ralph E. Simons of Marble Rock and Rhonda L. Simons of Ft. Dodge; a sister, Velva Moorman of Manchester; a sister-in-law, Amber Stemen, nee Simons of Charlotte, NC; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira E. and Jenny L. Pohlman; her husband, Ralph C. Simons; four brothers, Ernie, John, Lloyd and Ervin Pohlman; and two sisters, Hester Pohlman and Gladys Baxter.
