Edna Joan Atkins Wolfe Newkirk, 74, of 1229 2nd St. SW, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at St. Luke?s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a long illness. Per her wishes, there will be no services or visitation. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Edna is survived by four children, Lee (Susie) Wolfe, Linda (Chuck Westphal) Newkirk, Sherman (Elaine) Newkirk and Connie (William) Soper, all of Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren, Leah, Carrie, Stephan, Alex, Brandon, Nicholas, Allison, Joseph, Tia (Pedro), and Melissa; four great-grandchildren, Zakk, Quinn, Emilio and Tianna; a brother-in-law, Ron Higham of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law, Verna Atkins of Cedar Rapids; many nieces and nephews; and a very close friend, Margaret Perkins of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; four sisters, Grace Makinster, Dorothy Allen, Nellie Twedell, Phyllis Higham; two brothers, Francis Atkins and Ray Atkins; and a son, Gregory Steven Wolfe.
Edna was born on May 2, 1930, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Francis S. and Nellie E. (Wood) Atkins. On August 3, 1963, Edna was united in marriage to Richard D. Newkirk. He died in 1978. She worked for Collins Radio in the 1960?s before becoming a homemaker. Edna enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and playing bingo.
